General Information:
The conference will be held on Thursday evening, March 25 and Friday, March 26, 2010 at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus in Coffman Union. The Thursday evening Meet & Greet Opening Reception will include Loretta Worthington, Director of Rainbow Health Initiative, who will address LGBTQ disparities in mental and physical health, and consultant and trainer Beth Zemsky, a founder of The Network who will discuss LGBTQ mental health trends over the past 25 years. We will round out the evening with a few laughs from lesbian therapist and consultant Donna DiMenna who does stand-up comedy.

The conference and Resource Fair occur all day on Friday. We plan to offer almost 50 workshops in 4 time slots and to host 300 conference attendees.  This cutting edge conference will offer up to 50 workshops that will explore changing paradigms in research and clinical practice as they relate to our understandings of diverse sexual and gender identities, as well as to issues of privilege, race, class, ability and sexual practices. This one day conference is committed to challenging stereotypes and bias, providing current mental health information, expanding perspectives, and engaging participants in the areas of clinical work, research and community involvement.    CEUs available.

This conference will be of particular interest to mental health professionals, health care practitioners, researchers in the health sciences, educators, and students in these fields and is open to any and all interested lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, genderqueer and allied individuals. CEUs will be available.

Keynote Speaker:
Katherine "Kit" Rachlin, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in New York and a certified sex therapist. She is an experienced clinician as well as an energetic advocate for transgender people, their families and partners. Kit has served on the board of directors of organizations such as FTM-International and The Harry Benjamin Association/World Professional Association for Transgender Health. A member of the American Psychological Association's Taskforce on Gender Identity, she is the author of many published papers and book chapters on transgender health and well being.

Augsburg College Feminist Collective hosts a Roundtable Discussion Series on Gender & Sexuality Friday, January 22 and Saturday, January 23, 2010
`Friday at 5 pm: Twin Cities Smitten Kitten Education Coordinator Clare Jacky facilitates discussion on safe, exploratory, and pleasureful queer sex.
`Friday at 7 pm: Twin Cities singer/songwriter Chastity Brown shares her complex soul - a country-born, gospel-raised, activist poet who sings about women, race, love and politics with an edgy tenderness. Discussion of her music with Chastity at the end of performance.

`Saturday at 11:30 am: Milwaukee sex therapist Psy.D. Lynn Vice facilitates discussion about the positive right to pleasure: the female orgasm, addressing questions such as What is sexual pleasure and what can it mean for each of us as individuals?

Contribute YOUR voices to the understanding and needs of OUR community.

Graduate student conducting a study examining the experiences of Black lesbian and bisexual women, seeking adult, US born and/or raised Black women (18+) who identify as queer, lesbian, bisexual or as women romantically and/or sexually attracted to other women to participate. Your participation would include two interviews. The first interview will include questions about your experience of your race and sexual orientation in communities of Color and in lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) communities. During the second interview you will be asked to provide feedback on your initial answers, general themes found in this study, and you will be asked to complete a brief survey. Interviews may be face-to-face or via phone (depending on your location and preference).

HIV infection rates among young gay/bi men ages 13-24 have nearly doubled in the last year and are the highest they've been since 1986.

Submit a video, audio, or other media with your HIV prevention and care services message for young gay/bi men by February 18th, and you could win $100 (gift card) and other prizes and see your work be featured in a statewide campaign!
 
The rules are simple: include at least one HIV message and be creative.

Finalists will be selected by a panel of HIV experts, and winners will be chosen by online voting.  All finalists will be honored at an awards reception.

ALL GENDER HEALTH ONLINE VIDEO 'SHORT' CONTEST:
Dear Community Members and/or Providers,
Happy holidays! Attached is a printable version of the announcement of the University of Minnesota's All Gender Health Online (AGHO) video 'short' (i.e., 1-3 minutes) contest. Winning videos will be incorporated into the AGHO online intervention for transgender individuals who have sex with non-trans men to promote sexual health and wellness; the intervention focuses on sexual desire, pleasure, the body, and relationships as well as transgender identities and communities. We want to make sure that as much content as possible is generated by the community for the community.
 
Please print and post the announcement for members of your local transgender communities to see, participate, and possibly win monetary prizes (the top ten videos will be awarded $100 each). The contest requires access to a webcam, the internet, as well as a participant's willingness to share their experiences in front of the camera. The deadline for submissions is January 22, 2010.

Lesbian Couples with Children Needed for a Study   
Seeking 15 Lesbian Couples with Children for the Following Study: Lesbian Motherhood and the "Presentation of We" Lesbian couples with children are invited to participate in a research study from Carleton College's Sociology and Anthropology Department.

Eligible participants must be self-identified lesbians in a committed same-sex relationship, have at least one child, and be physically and mentally capable of fulfilling all study requirements. The overall purpose of this study is to determine how lesbian parents attempt to present their families as 'natural' and 'legitimate,' both within the family and externally, in their dealings with social institutions.

Study participants will be asked to complete a short survey, keep a journal for one week, and take part in a final, hour-long interview. There is no compensation for involvement in this study, but interested participants will receive a final copy of the senior thesis to be based on this research. MAKING AN IMPACT ON AGING IN WEST SEVENTH AND HIGHLAND PARK COMMUNITIES

Are you concerned about how you will live successfully into old age in your community?  This is a unique opportunity to impact the services that might be available to you as a senior or after you retire.  Seeking 60+year old lesbian - particularly African-American or Latina - to participate in a federal initiative called NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities) beginning in the West 7th and Highland neighborhoods.  The project goals include:

* enhancing senior access to wellness and mental health resources
* increasing opportunities for volunteerism for and by seniors
* streamlining delivery of social services that allow seniors to "age in place" in their communities

A steering committee is forming.  The initiative is reaching out to ensure that the diversity of senior (or those nearing retirement) residents are represented.  If you would like to be considered for the committee, are 60+ yr and live in one of the targeted neighborhoods contact the NORC Project Coordinator: Nancy E. Welcome to the MN LGBTQA Therapists eNewsletter of "The Network." The Network is a MN based grass-roots group of queer & allied mental health therapists, students in mental health related fields, and community mental-health related agencies. Our group shares information and resources that impact our varied work in the mental health fields and that is unique to the particular needs of the LGBTQ communities we live in and serve.
