Resource Library to support the Minneapolis Uprisings

This document is intended for those who would like to support the Minneapolis uprisings against police violence, support the community through the process of rebuilding, and demand justice for George Floyd and all others killed by police or impacted by police violence through systematic change to the criminal justice system.  This is by no means an exhaustive list of resources, but it is a place to start.

All resources, information, and contact info have been gathered through many hours of online research and thanks to the work of many others sharing them on social media and through the Google Form linked here.  If you have anything you’d like to share or feedback on the document, you can let us know through this Google Form.  When possible, please  include links to original sources of information.

“Uprising Minnesota is a platform with the simple goal of curating information on how to directly support and uplift the work of Black-led community organizations leading the fight for police abolition in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

This platform was built directly in partnership with Black Visions Collective, Free Black Dirt, Million Artist Movement, Minnesota Youth Collective, Reclaim The Block, and Women for Political Change — meaning that all the information on here is coming directly from these organizations.”

Donate: Community Funds and Organizations

Please consider setting up a recurring donation.  Recurring donations often help organizations to plan financially as they can more accurately predict their future financial situation.

If a particular organization does not have an automatic recurring donation option, you can reach out to them and ask if they can suggest a way for you to do that.  Or just DIY and set a reminder on your phone or calendar for each month!

Studiiyo23 was recently featured on Fox 9 locals news in Minnesota following the Last Dance Michael Jordan documentary. Moh Habib, the owner of the shop, is a vital part of the sneaker community in Minnesota and has served the community since the founding of his shop in August 2010. This is an underrated shop that has suffered a terrible loss of 75% of inventory and irreplaceable collectibles. This GoFundMe campaign was started in the hopes that we can help Studiiyo23 recover from this loss/tragedy and that they will again be a beacon of hope in the community. CO-SIGN OUR LETTER TO GOV. TIM WALZ

The COVID-19 outbreak hasn't caused the ACLU-MN to shift its focus. It has only made our work — and our priority issues — that much more urgent. On March 18, 2020, we sent a letter to Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison and other elected leaders asking them to respect the rights and protect the health of all Minnesotans by:

  • Limiting arrests to only the most serious offenses.
  • Releasing people who are in jail simply because they can’t afford to post bail.
  • Recognizing at-risk people should not be in jail, absent extraordinary circumstances.

CALL COUNTY SHERIFFS IN MINNESOTA

We’ve already asked ICE to release these individuals and even sued for their release. But in the meantime county jails should take the proper precautions to safeguard against the spread of COVID-19.  People should be tested if they show any sign of illness, and the jail should release information daily on the number of people tested and the number of confirmed cases, for the entire population — not just ICE detainees.

Please call county sheriffs whose jails also house ICE detainees, and ask them to:

  • Test anyone who is ill, including staff
  • Publish daily reports on the number of people tested, including the number of positive and negative tests
  • Send testing reports to the Department of Corrections

CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION

The presidential primary has already occurred in Minnesota, but Election Day (Nov. 3, 2020) will be here before you know it. Double-check whether you're registered by visiting the Voter Information Portal, courtesy of the Minnesota Secretary of State. Not registered yet? No need to worry! You can register to vote online.

We’re fortunate that Minnesota already allows us to vote by mail, with no excuse required. To learn more about how to vote early by mail, visit: https://www.sos.state.mn.us/elections-voting/other-ways-to-vote/vote-early-by-mail/

FILL OUT YOUR CENSUS FORM

If you or your neighbors aren’t counted, your community will have less representation in government and receive fewer resources. When everybody participates in the census , it makes for a healthier democracy. That's why the ACLU fought hard to make sure that a citizenship question, which would have suppressed responses and skewed counts, is not on the census.

Most people will receive census form via mail. But whether or not you receive a census form in your mailbox, you can complete the census form online. If you have questions about the census, check out the ACLU's "Census 2020: What You Need to Know."

CONTACT OFFICIALS AND URGE THEM TO ACT

Contact your elected officials directly to urge them to reduce the number of people incarcerated across the state. We know that jails and prisons are especially vulnerable to outbreak, which means that people who are incarcerated are at extreme risk of illness and death. We cannot allow these threats to go unchecked — we need to decarcerate now.

  • “We work with groups of white-identified people, using multiple learning modalities, including multimedia, mindfulness, and a variety of movement-based activities to create a supportive learning community. We unpack the old stories of whiteness that inform our society and our personal lives, and begin to imagine a new way of being human together. We believe real change requires more than changing our individual attitudes or reforming our laws and institutions (both of which are necessary). Creating a racially just society will also require changing the implicit beliefs, mental models, and cultural narratives that shape our attitudes as well as our institutions.”
